A man in a dark cloak walks through the fog of the East End of London a few hours before dawn. As he walks he recognizes different places and it brings back memories of his childhood growing up in the area. He realizes he still thinks of this place as home despite the years of study to become a priest.
A constable making his rounds interrupts the cloaked man's reverie by asking who he is. The man introduces himself as Father Thomas Lenoir and that he is travelling to his sister's home. The constable tests him by asking some trick questions about his sister's family. Assured that Thomas is who he says he is, the constable provides directions and Thomas hurries on.
